As war clouds gathered and finally broke in Europe during the 1930s, Charles Lindbergh, American flight hero and pioneer in the development of commercial aviation, aligned his voice and influence with the effort to keep America out of another European war—especially through his association with the country’s foremost isolationist group, the America First Committee.
Origins of the America First Committee
AFC took root at Yale University Law School in 1940 as anti-war students sought to establish a national student organization opposed to intervention in the European war. They—like a good margin of Americans—believed the country had already paid dearly for its intervention in World War I, and that the mistake should not be repeated.
Many of the organizers would later gain national prominence in other areas, including Potter Steward, later Supreme Court Justice, and Gerald Ford, future president of the United States. (Ford soon resigned from the committee, reportedly because he feared losing his job as assistant football coach at Yale.)
